The Reflecting Together Project

Dr Stefanie Conradt

Funded by the William Leech Research Fund

This theological action research project was conducted in the North East of England. In partnership with members, trustees, staff and volunteers of Churches Together South Tyneside (CTST) we studied how loneliness and isolation is experienced by the community’s older members. Reflecting on what is offered by the beneficiaries and local parishioners, a more refined understanding of loneliness and social isolation emerged. Learning about these nuances, have impacted CTST’s pastoral and prophetic ways of working. Including external representatives of local churches as well as social care and health care agencies in this theological reflection process, revealed meaningful insights that address social as well as individual dimensions of loneliness and social isolation. Working in reflective conversations with theological educators, contributions in academia will be made that address pastoral and congregational concerns. Committing to the reflective practice this project gives voice to the marginalised living in the deprived area of South Tyneside.
