Just knowing: How do we create knowledge that does justice to marginalized voices?
Revd. Jane Day and Dr Helen Cameron, Regent’s Park College, Oxford
‘Nothing about us without us’ is a frequent cry for justice from marginalized groups. Yet this cry also recognizes people who are ‘not us’ who we hope will change to include us as fully human and able to flourish. How do we create knowledge that does justice to marginalized voices, enabling them to speak, but in a way the protects their dignity and mobilizes action from those with the power to make changes? This seminar will explore Project Violet, a three-year project to explore women’s experience of ministry in the Baptist tradition. Using Theological Action Research, the project has involved Baptist women to understand more fully the theological, missional, and structural obstacles they face resulting in 57 requests for change. This just knowledge has been responded to by commitments to action from across the Baptist community. The Project Violet co-leaders will highlight the challenges involved in creating this just knowledge and seek resonances from their audience from their engagement with injustice.
The project website can be found at www.projectviolet.org.uk.
